1961년, 매니저 앨버트 그로먼스에 의해 결성된

피터 폴 앤드 메리는 포크 분야의 선구자입니다.

 

피터는 1938년 5월31일, 뉴욕 태생이며

코넬 대학 심리학과 학생시절에

뉴포트 포크 페스티벌에 참여하는 등 재능을 보였고,

1937년 11월 30일, 미시건 주에서 태어난 노엘 폴 스투케이는

고교시절에 이미 그룹을 결성해 활동했습니다.

 

메리는 1937년 11월 7일, 뉴욕에서 태어났으며

폴과 함께 포크그룹의 일원으로 활동했는데

이들의 히트곡으로는 싱글 Lemon Tree, 500Miles,

Puff The Magic Dragon등 다수가 있지요.

 

혼성 트리오인 이들은 내면적이고 서정적인 포크로

밥 딜런과는 또 다른 형태의 포크 붐을 주도했습니다.

 

인권과 반전이라는 모던 포크의 기본적 성향과 맥을 같이 하면서도

멜로디와 화음, 맑고 서정적인 보컬로

기존의 팝 음악과 맥을 같이했던 이들의 음악은

상업적으로도 큰 성공을 거두어 사이먼 앤 가펑클이 등장하기 전까지

대중들로부터 가장 많은 사랑을 받은 포크 그룹입니다.
