1970년 4월에 비틀즈의 해산설과 더불어 미국에서 예약으로만 370만 매가 팔렸던
그들의 마지막 앨범 「Let It Be」의 타이틀 곡으로 비틀즈 통산 20번째이며 그해
4월 11일과 18일 2주간 빌보드 차트 1위에 올랐다.
Simon & Garfulkel의 "Bridge Over Troubled Water"를 누르고 1위로 등극한
이 곡은 비틀즈 노래 중 국내에서 가장 많이 애청 되는 곡 중 하나며 제목으로 쓰인
Let it be는 일부러 바꾸려 하지 말고 그냥 그대로 두면 자연스럽게 문제가 해결된다는 말 즉,
순리에 맡겨라는 내용의 노래다.
폴 맥카트니가 이미 작고한 자신의 어머니를 꿈에 보고 작곡했다 한다.
비틀즈의 마지막 12번째 스튜디오 앨범으로 싱글은 1970년 3월 6일에,
그리고 앨범은 5월 8일에 발매되었다. 당시 비틀즈는 공연 피로와 멤버간의 불화로
어려움에 처해 있었는데 폴은 그러한 어려움을 어머니의 말씀을 되새기며
헤쳐 나가고자 하는 마음을 노래에 담았다고 한다.
